Utah County knows how to throw a party!!
The Utah County Republican party barbecue and family party was held Saturday evening in Orem, with hundreds of people of attending. Congressman Jason Chaffetz, Governor Gary Herbert, Senator Bob Bennett, Cherilyn Eagar, Mark Shurtleff, James Williams and most Utah county representatives and senators were there to mix and mingle.
One of the key events of the evening was a non-scientific straw poll for three Senate candidates. 3-term incumbent Bob Bennett came in last with 26% of the vote. Cherilyn Eagar received 32% and current AG, Mark Shurtleff received 42%. The poll seems to reflect the growing dissatisfaction with Washington DC and incumbent federal legislators.
Besides a great dinner, other fun activities included a bounce house for the kids, a 21-gun salute for Utah’s new governor, a couple of bands and a giant replica of the US Constitution for attendees to sign. State GOP Chair Dave Hansen gave props to two great Republicans from Utah county – Congressman Jason Chaffetz and Governor Gary Herbert. Hansen reminded the crowd that sticking to core Republican values wins elections.
Utah County GOP chair, Taylor Oldroyd, thanked the outgoing legislative district chairs and welcomed the new ones elected on Thursday night, then introduced Gary Herbert, the first governor from Utah County. Governor Herbert addressed the appreciative crowd and reiterated his commitment to leading this state through tough economic times in a fiscally prudent manner – balancing our budget, getting rid of waste and keeping government out of our pockets. He and his wife Jeanette stayed for a couple of hours, shaking hands, having their picture taken and visiting with anyone who wanted to bend his ear.
This year, the new Education Officer for Utah County, Adrielle Herring, set up an education booth, with free copies of the Constitution, copies of the movie “A More Perfect Union“, Founding Fathers finger puppets and handouts on everything from a handout on “How to Get Involved” to a list of current Utah County legislators and more. They also promoted the county’s new website – check it out – it is awesome.
Already looking forward to next year’s events!
